Cumming man dies in 5-car crash Friday

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — One Cumming man was killed and another was charged with vehicular homicide following a 5-vehicle crash at the intersection of Ga. 400  Friday evening.

James Wright, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene after Freightliner tractor traveling northbound at highway speeds struck the rear of a Nissan. The Nissan Rogue and the Freightliner crossed over the center median into the southbound lanes.

The Freightliner which was driven ty 61-year-old Charles Wilkins of Cumming then struck a Kia Sorrento driven by Mr. Wright at the driver’s side front door. All other drivers and passengers, including Mr. Wilkins, were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon discharge from the emergency room, Charles Wilkins was taken into custody and transported to the Forsyth County Jail charged with Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree, Reckless Driving, Too Fast for Conditions and Following Too Close.  He is being held on no bond.

This crash remains under investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.

Cumming man dies in Thursday traffic accident

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Cumming man was killed Thursday evening when the 2021 Harley Davidson Softail he was riding was struck by a GMC Canyon on Canton Highway at the entrance to Green’s Corners Shopping Plaza.

Andrew Perillo, 31, was traveling east on Canton Highway after being stopped at the red light at Bethelview Road. His motorcycle was struck by an unidentified 16-year-old driver traveling west on Canton Highway. The driver of the GMC attempted to turn left into the shopping plaza and struck the motorcycle. Mr. Perillo was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Forsyth County Fire Department responded to the scene. The teen was uninjured in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Specialist Unit.

Forsyth County deputies investigate fatality involving car and lawn mower

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County deputies are investigating a fatal accident involving a car and riding lawn mower that occurred at4 p.m. Wednesday on Hopewell Road near Church Road.

The accident claimed the life of 68-year-old Paul Nix of Cumming who was operating the mower in his front yard near the roadway when a white Ford Fusion operated by 22-year-old Kenneth Johnson failed to negotiate the curve and struck the mower.  Mr. Nix was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Johnson sustained minor injuries.

During the on-scene investigation, a cell phone was in the debris on the ground outside of the Fusion and was confirmed to belong to Johnson.  The text screen was active, and it appeared that Johnson was replying to a text at the time of the crash.

Field sobriety evaluations were also conducted on Johnson.  At the conclusion of the evaluation, it was determined that Johnson was driving under the influence.  He was placed under arrest and charged with Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree, Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, Too Fast For Conditions, Failure to Maintain Lane and Writing Sending Reading Texts While Driving.  He was transported to the Forsyth County Jail and is being held on no bond.

Two people killed in head-on collision in Forsyth County Tuesday

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a head-on crash at the intersection of Bannister Road and Mockingbird Road Tuesday morning.

A 2003 Honda Accord was traveling south on Bannister Road while a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling northbound.  For reasons undetermined at this point, the Honda crossed into the northbound lane striking the Hyundai.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 36-year-old Jessica James of Dawsonville, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The 14-year-old passenger was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the Hyundai, identified as 38-year-old Sarah Decoteau of Dawsonville, was transported by Life Flight to a local hospital, but was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

The driver of the Hyundai was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators noted that the two victims of this crash were not wearing their seatbelts and the two survivors were.

This crash remains under investigation by Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Specialist Unit.

 

Cumming man struck and killed by vehicle on Peachtree Parkway

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Cumming man was struck and killed Friday morning while trying to aid a motorist involved in minor traffic accident.

At approximately 7 a.m. the driver of a Toyota Prius was traveling south on Peachtree Parkway near Granite Lane and made a sudden left turn onto the concrete median that divided the roadway. Forsyth County 9-1-1 received several calls regarding two people being struck by a vehicle on Peachtree Parkway near Granite Lane.  Several people stopped to assist with the crashed vehicle.

Two citizens were attempting to open the driver’s side door when they were struck by a 2006 Dodge Durango that was traveling north on Peachtree Parkway.  The Prius partially obstructed the view of the lane and the Durango driver did not see the pedestrians.

One of the pedestrians was transported to Northside Forsyth with non-life-threatening injuries and the other, 48-year-old John Waldon of Cumming, was transported to Emory John’s Creek where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

This case remains under investigation by the Traffic Specialists Unit.

Cumming woman killed in single-vehicle crash

CUMMING, Ga. — A Cumming woman was killed in a single-vehicle accident in the area of Polo Fields Parkway and Bethelview Road Wednesday.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, 58-year-old Sheila Giglia was traveling westbound on Bethelview in the inside lane in a 2007 KIA Sedona and did not navigate the slight curve. The Sedona continued west bound in the east bound lanes crossing two lanes of oncoming traffic and through the intersection of Polo Fields Parkway before striking a tree.

The Sheriff’s Office, along with other emergency personnel, arrived on scene and found the driver unresponsive. She was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The crash remains under investigation.

Lula man killed in crash on SR 369

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – On Friday (Aug. 21) at approximately 6:25 a.m. Troopers from the Cumming Post of the Georgia State Patrol were called to investigate a fatal crash in Forsyth County on SR 369 (Browns Bridge Road) approximately 0.3 miles west of Little Mill Road.

A 2001 Honda CR-V, driven by 24 year old Jordan William Jenkins from Lula was traveling west on SR 369 when it traveled onto the north shoulder, struck a culvert, vaulted into the air, and collided with a utility pole.  Mr. Jenkins was deceased upon the arrival of first responders.

Mr. Jenkins was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors at this time.
