FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Senior Services has many activities to offer patrons age 55 and up. This Feb. 11 Valentine’s Day Senior Dance is just one example.
A full range of activities is laid out in their bi-monthly newsletter with something for people with every kind of interest from pottery to hiking. Senior Services also offers other services such as Meals on Wheels, memory care programs and so much more for active and older adults.

Senior Services will host Caregiver Fair

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Senior Services will host a Caregiver Assistance and Resource Event (CARE) Fair to showcase information and resources available to residents and caretakers throughout the community.
The CARE Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Sexton Hall Enrichment Center (2115 Chloe Rd.). Various local nonprofits and government agencies will be featured Friday and local businesses will be featured during the event Saturday.
Admission is free and the fair will offer interactive elements such as health screenings, balance courses provided by Occupational Therapy students/faculty from Brenau University and an innovative aids showroom. Many of the innovative aids showcased will also be provided at no cost to Forsyth County residents age 60 plus. All attendees will also receive a care package.
“This is a great opportunity for residents, seniors and caretakers, to meet with community leaders on the topic of aging well,” said Senior Services Director Ruthie Brew. “Our goal with the event is to get information and resources in the hands of local residents to help them maintain their independence and a better quality of life.”

Parks & Rec receives Agency of the Year Award

Forsyth County, Ga. – Forsyth County Parks & Recreation received the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) Agency of the Year Award during the GRPA awards banquet on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The award is presented annually to five population groups within the state, with Forsyth County falling into the largest population category – 150,000 residents and over.
“The annual state award recognizes exemplary agencies for their work over the last year,” said Parks & Recreation Director Jim Pryor. “I am so proud of the exceptional efforts made by our staff to make this award possible and sincerely appreciate the continuous support our system receives from the Board of Commissioners, the Parks & Recreation Board and residents.”
Forsyth County’s Agency of the Year Award nomination entry included information about staff development, budgeting and resources, facilities offered and use of technology. Nominees for the award are judged on major accomplishments made within the last year as well as new and outstanding programs offered.
One of the major accomplishments included in the nomination was the Department’s 14 current capital projects, including renovating older parks, developing new parks and adding new amenities to current parks. Other highlights presented in the nomination for outstanding programs included the growth of Therapeutic Recreation programs, the restoration of the Poole’s Mill covered bridge and the launch of a Parks & Recreation Facebook page.
The Forsyth County Senior Services Department received the GRPA Programming Network Award. They were recognized for their efforts in developing new, online programs and a monthly newsletter that were created in response to COVID-19. With 600 online participants per month, the Senior Services Department plans to continue these programs.
Parks & Recreation Athletic Manager Wayne Maddox received the GRPA Roy A. Hammond Leadership Award. Maddox was recognized for his contributions of inspiration, leadership and mentorship to others.
All were recognized by the Board of Commissioners on Nov. 5 during their regularly scheduled board meeting.

Holiday Angel, Holiday Gift Certificate programs will brighten residents holiday season

Forsyth County, Ga. – Forsyth County Senior Services invites residents to participate in the 2020 Holiday Gift Angels and Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Programs throughout the holiday season.
Holiday Gift Angels Program: Personalized gift request tags containing the name of a local senior citizen as well as a gift idea are available for participants. To become a holiday gift angel:
1. Pick up a gift request tag for a local senior citizen at any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations. Participants can also request a gift tag by contacting Senior Services at (770) 781-2178 or by emailing 1. [email protected].
2. Acquire a gift. Each gift request tag lists the name of a local senior citizen along with a gift idea for him/her.
3. Bring the unwrapped gift (or contact Senior Services for safe ways to donate) – in a gift bag with the gift request tag attached (or route number) – to any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations during business hours by Dec. 1, 2020.
Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Program: Participants can give the gift of a nutritious meal, friendly visit and safety check to a local homebound senior. Meals purchased with a holiday gift certificate through Forsyth County Senior Services will be delivered through the Meals on Wheels program.
Those interested in purchasing a holiday gift certificate may choose to provide meals for a day, week, month or year. The cost for a meal certificate is $4 for one day, $20 for one week, $85 for one month and $1,000 for an entire year.

All meals delivered from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day will include a special certificate from the meal provider with a holiday message for the recipient. Senior Services has set a goal of delivering 3,500 meals to local senior citizens this holiday season.
In 2019, community members purchased over 3,000 holiday meals for homebound older adults.
