FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputy School Superintendent Joey Pirkle presented the timeline for the Forsyth County School System’s 2020 redistricting plan at Tuesday’s meeting.

The primary objectives of redistricting are to relieve overcrowding at existing schools and to functionally populate any new schools opening. Students in grades 5 and 8 and their siblings who are affected by redistricting to another school will be given the opportunity to remain at their present school for one year only, provided their parents or guardians agree to provide transportation. All other students must attend the school serving the geographic zone in which they reside unless approved through the out-of-district application process. New traditional high schools will open with grades 9 through 11 only. Rising seniors can remain at their current schools.

Schools that will need to be populated are Hendricks Middle School grades 6 through 8 and East Forsyth High School grades 9 through 11. Both schools are scheduled to open August 2021.

Pirkle stated, “Potentially impacted middle schools include, but are not limited to, Liberty, North Forsyth, Otwell, Vickery Creek. Potentially impacted high schools include North Forsyth, Forsyth Central and West Forsyth.”

The timeline is as follows:

Sept 15 at 6 p.m., the School Board will approve the plan

Oct. 13, staff will present a draft map to the Board at 4p.m.

Oct. 14-28, the public can provide online feedback on the draft map

Oct. 22, a public forum will be held for the middle school draft map at Forsyth Central High School at 6 p.m.

Oct 27, a public forum will be held for the high school draft map at North Forsyth High School at 6 p.m.

Nov. 10, School Board will discuss public input, review staff recommendations and any proposed changes 4 p.m.

Nov. 17 School Board approves the final plan

Dec. 1 through Jan. 8 Out-of-district application period.
