WFHS teacher assignment: Spy on parents, students, other teachers

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A recent West Forsyth High School graduate told the Board of Education that a sociology, psychology class assignment during her senior year required students to spy on their parents, teachers and fellow students to report derogatory statements they make about certain classes of people.

Caroline Andrews said, “So I had a Forsyth County school teacher tell me I should listen to the language of my parents and spy on them. I think that is entirely inappropriate and I think that should be investigated.”

The assignment, which was entitled Tracking Prejudice Speech in School, directed the class to track derogatory comments heard during a school day about racial/ethnic minorities, women, religious groups, different sexual orientation and the physically and mentally handicapped and to keep a tally of how many times each group has been spoken about in a derogatory manner that day. It also directed students to “DO THIS PRIVATELY.”

She presented a copy of the assignment to support her claim.

She also called on the Board to stop creating classes like the new Women’s Study class. The teacher in question, Andrews said, serves on the advisory board for the class.

“Do you think this type of politics won’t make its way into these intro classes? So I am here tonight to ask the Board to please, please, please stop implementing these classes because they will be methods to teach cultural Marxism to students and please investigate any teachers that are trying to get students to turn against their parents.

“I’ve studied history. I know what happened in the cultural revolution of China. This kind of assignment that led to that and I think it should be investigated.”

Board members did not respond to our request for comment on this article nor have they responded to Ms. Andrews.

  • Not surprised…….FCSS wants to push their agenda and force students, teachers and staff to follow suit!

    • Thank you for reading Fetch Your News, Andrea. We're the only news out willing to cover this type of news. Sadly, you're right. It appears the School Board doesn't care what parents or students think. They have refused to communicate with Ms. Andrews or myself.

    • Before posting this "news" article, you should have checked the validity of this girl's assertion. The assignment mentioned by this former student said nothing about "spying" on parents and recording their language. It is a gross misrepresentation of the truth that she purposely maligned her teacher with ridiculous assertions. Unlike a real journalist, you made no attempt to verify her statement nor to seek any rebuttal from the teacher. You've played right into her biased agenda.

      • Thank you for reading Fetch Your News, Patricia. I welcome you comments even though I disagree with your assertion.

  • My son graduated from Lambert HS last year. He took several psychology classes. Sociology is the study of human behavior. This assignment was legitimate, beneficial and certainly educational. The only reason anyone is offended is b/c they know these words are harmful but they do not find them offensive. The fact that Forsyth teachers are exploring issues such as a women’s studies gives me hope. Our children deserve to know the good, bad and ugly. Truly that is the only way we move forward as a society.

  • Bravo for this *TEACH*er for bringing awareness to her classroom. By senior year, students should be able to think independently. That does not mean they think in opposition to their parents, but that they hold their own ideas and can validate them.

Little conversation happening around a person who has announced they are recording the instances of derogatory and/or hateful remarks made around them is going to be authentic. The conversations happening around the person will be guarded, the very opposite of what the record is meant to document. This skews the analysis; if no one is speaking hatefully, it is easy to point to that research and say "my peers, teachers, and the adults in my life are not biased" but that is wrong because they knew their words were being monitored. You don't tell a group of people whose calories you're measuring that you're going to be measuring--they will eat very healthy/abnormally. Also, let's take a moment to appreciate that the assignment was all-inclusive, even of teachers.

While our (written and recorded) history is male-dominated, it is not male exclusive. We should study the contributions of women! How sad to diminish the progress led by your own sex! As a young woman, I would hope that she be inspired by the achievements of women before her and aspire to accomplish some of her own.

I have known people like this student. Their young adulthood is challenging. They must square the sanitized version of the world they've been offered with the realities that are not always comfortable. I hope this student that she finds her way in life.

    • Thank you for your comments Renee. I have great admiration for Ms. Andrews. She graduated with honors and is now attending college. She delivered a cogent and respectful request for an investigation to her representatives on the Board of Education who, nearly a week later, haven’t showed her the respect to respond. I believe this young lady knows exactly who she is and has an incredibly bright future.
