City of Cumming Cemetery gets a facelift

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The City of Cumming Cemetery is getting a badly needed facelift thanks to Sgt. Christy Vickers and members of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Jail Bureau RSAT (Residential Substance Abuse Treatment) program.

Vickers, who heads up the programs, said, “The RSAT participants are honored to be a part of this project and are enthusiastically looking forward to seeing a beautifully restored cemetery. They have already put many hours into this project and have many more to go, but this has been an invaluable learning opportunity for all of them.”

Participants have worked to clear out dead trees and overgrown brush and are now working on restoring the headstones. From day one, the participants have eagerly worked on the project. They take great pride in everything they do in the cemetery and continue to gain a sense of accomplishment as  they see their progress.

Participants made the following comments on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page:

  • “The cemetery project is wonderful therapy. To be doing something positive and productive is an amazing feeling. It is beneficial in helping me realize to appreciate that most things that are worth doing are not easy. Just like recovery, it is not easy, but the harder I work at it, the greater the milestones.”
  • “It just feels good to be able to give back and take the opportunity to pay it forward.”
  • “It makes me feel good knowing I am taking care of the cemetery and humbles me and keeps me rooted in what is important in life because it will not be there forever.”
  • “Thank you for letting me help with this project; it gives me great pleasure to be able to give back to the community and restore some of the awesome history that this county has.”
  • “I feel this is a way for me to give back for the wrong I have done, and it is helping me find peace and forgiveness with myself. It gives me a sense of pride and a new level of standards.”
