Derrer lone finalist for interim county manager

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – A familiar face will be returning as Forsyth County’s interim County Manager soon.

Doug Derrer, who served as county manager for nine years before retiring in 2017, is expected to be named interim county manager in September.

The county issued the following statement Monday (Aug. 17):

“Pursuant to the requirements of O.C.G.A. 50-18-72(a)(11) and formal action taken by the Board of Commissioners at its regular meeting on August 6, 2020, the Forsyth Board of Commissioners does hereby announce that Doug Derrer (former County Manager) is under consideration to be appointed as interim County Manager and is deemed to be best qualified to serve in that interim role. Documents concerning this final candidate are available for inspection and copying, upon an Open Records Act request being made. No final vote or action on this interim appointment will occur until September 3, 2020.”

Derrer began his service with Forsyth County in February 2008 as deputy county manager and was named county manager in March 2009. One of the major projects completed during his tenure was the construction of a badly-needed $100 million courthouse/jailhouse complex.

He has more than 40 years of local government experience including having served as the public works director and public safety director for Hall County, warden at the Hall County Correctional Institution, city manager for Flowery Branch and a police officer for Miami-Dade County in Florida.
