The Lambert Longhorns and Mountain View Bears faced off on a showery Friday night. While the weather was dreadful, there was a radiating star on the field by the name of Tommy Lafayette. Lambert ended up cruising over Mountain View 27-13.
Mountain View’s only score in the first half came off a great play by the Bears’ defense. Lambert gave the ball right to Mountain View on a fumble by the Longhorns on their own 25 yd line. They proceed to go all the way down to the goal line after being stopped on first and second down. On third and goal Senior QB Mason Kidd throws to the flat to JR Zyon Davis who throws off a Lambert corner and walks in for the touchdown. They proceed to miss the extra point.
6-0 Bears
Tommy Lafayette’s career day begins on the kickoff right after the score. The Bears kick down to the one-yard line where Lafayette fields it on the left side, goes up the middle, cuts to the right sideline, and outruns everyone as he takes the kickoff all the way 99 yds for a Longhorns six. A spectacular way to answer back from the sophomore. The bears then proceed to block the extra point.
6-6 Tie Game
Lambert’s defense holds on the next possession and they don’t waste any time getting back in the endzone. Lambert drives down the field after the punt, where on the Bear’s 30 yd line Senior TE Luke Logan cooks his man off the line and catches a streak for a 30 yd touchdown. The extra point was made this time.
13-6 Lambert
Mountainview could not seem to get anything going. After a great pass for a 35 yd gain they give the ball right back as they fumble and JR LB Noah Dobbs dives on it for the Longhorns
Lambert drove down and stopped on Mountain View’s 38 yd line and attempted a field goal. The Bear’s special team played great as they then blocked another field goal.
After another 3 and out for Mountain View, Lambert gets the ball. After a couple of runs to get to midfield the Sophomore does it again. SR QB James Tyre fakes the handoff and rolls out left. After a miscommunication by the Bear’s secondary, Lafayette is wide open on the wheel route where he proceeds to use his speed to run up the sideline past everyone for his second Lambert Touchdown.
20-6 Longhorns
Lambert Athletic Director Drew Ferrer, “Tommy’s having a great year already, works very hard and the kid is explosive. In regards to this game, if he gets enough carries and touches he was gonna do something special.”
Mountain View received the second-half kick and finally answered. After driving down the field with some great routes and blocking from the offensive line, they reach the Lambert 30 yd line.
JR WR gets open and QB Mason Kidd throws a strike for the Bear’s touchdown.
20-13 Longhorns
Both teams’ offenses became stagnant as the defensive side of the ball stepped up. That was until Lambert delivered the nail in the coffin on another stellar play by Lafayette. QB James Tyre after not being able to find anyone open downfield, throws a swing pass to his right side to the sophomore. Catches it, throws off one Bear’s defender, and jukes another one out of his shoes for a 50 yd touchdown.
27-13 Lambert
Lambert’s defense proceeded to stop them consecutively and run the clock out in the fourth quarter as Lambert picked up their third win of the season.
Tommy Lafayette had an absolute star-studded night as he continues to have a monstrous year. He finished the night with 300 all-purpose yards and averaged 10.4 yds per carry. Also adding on 3 TDS makes for an impeccable night. I asked him what his mentality is as he keeps putting up impressive numbers.
“The goal is positive yards, to help the team in any way possible. Keep the expectations to a minimum, don’t go into the game thinking about 3 or 2 touchdowns, just think about what I can do to help us win.”
Spoken like a true veteran from the young sophomore. Lambert moves to 3-0 as they take a trip to Flowery Branch to play the 2-1 Falcons after picking up their first loss this week. The Bears look to bounce back as they travel up to play the 1-2 Jackson County Panthers.
